VLC Media Player app coming to Android in the next few months

After being kicked out of the Apple App Store, VideoLAN, the makers of the popular VLC Media Player app, are turning to Google’s more open Android Market.
Android news site Android Guys are reporting that work is well underway with an Android version of the VLC app, and we should see a Beta version released in the next 1-2 months.
VLC Media Player is a fantastic open source program which was initially only PC based, but is now going mobile. Due to a massive list of codecs and compatible file types, you’ll rarely find a video or audio track that VLC won’t be able to play, which is what makes it such a great resource.
VideoLAN’s VLC Player for Android is expected to work on versions of Android from 1.5 and up, and will include new Video and Audio APIs specifically for tablet devices running Android Gingerbread (3.0).

ZOMM Announces Mobile Android Application at CTIA Wireless 2011

OMM, LLC (www.zomm.com), a global technology company and developer of the world’s first Wireless LeashTM for cell phones, introduces its first mobile application. Available for all Android-powered smartphones, the myZOMMTM mobile app allows a more seamless user experience by being able to set up and manage all of the ZOMMTM features from the user’s mobile phone.

(Note: The myZOMM mobile app will be demonstrated at CTIA Booth #5226.)

“Developing mobile applications was a natural next step for ZOMM and we are excited to share the myZOMM mobile app at CTIA,” said Henry Penix, CEO of ZOMM, LLC. “The introduction of the myZOMM mobile app, as well as being named as a CTIA Emerging Technology Award finalist, continues to affirm ZOMM’s position as a leader in the global technology space.”

The myZOMM mobile app provides users a mobile platform to set up and adjust the device preferences, such as naming the ZOMM, muting the device, programming/changing the alert distance and programming/changing the emergency contact number. An added feature allows for an alert to be sent from the myZOMM mobile app directly to the ZOMM Wireless Leash. If the user has misplaced the device, keys, or other item to which the ZOMM is attached, they can now find them by initiating ZOMM’s alarm from their mobile phone. The app also provides the capability to program custom profiles, allowing owners to choose if the ZOMM vibrates, flashes, sounds an alarm, or a combination, when the Bluetooth connection is broken.

CTIA Emerging Technology Awards Finalist

ZOMM has been named a finalist in the Mobile CE: Fashion & Lifestyle Products and Mobile CE: Accessories categories in the CTIA Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards. CTIA’s sixth annual E-Tech Awards program recognizes products in 14 categories. More than 80 prominent media and industry analysts judged the 300-plus entries submitted for the E-Tech Awards program. Products are judged on innovation, functionality, technological importance/impact, implementation and overall “wow” factor.

Using Bluetooth® technology, the keychain-sized ZOMM prevents users from losing or misplacing their mobile phone by vibrating, flashing lights and sounding an alarm when they separate from their phone. With added features of call notification, a fully functional speakerphone with a noise-canceling microphone for safe hands-free communication while driving and a personal safety device for emergencies, the ZOMM is the ultimate multi-functional accessory for any Bluetooth-enabled phone.

Created for ZOMM users, the myZOMM mobile app will be available for a free download on zomm.com and in the Android Market on March 30, 2011.

Cobra Products Link With New Android Apps

hree Cobra products compatible with an iPhone app are now compatible with new Android apps.

The products are the Cobra Phone- Lynx, Cobra iRadar, and Cobra’s Tag Bluetooth tagging system.

PhoneLynx for Android, available May 1 at a suggested $59.99 with free Android app, is a Bluetooth-enabled device that lets consumers use their landline-phone system to originate and receive cellular calls through their Bluetooth- connected smartphone.

From any home phone, the device and app enable consumers to use the voicedialing feature of their Android phone. The device also activates a home phone’s message-indicator light when cellphone voicemail arrives, and it lets users save frequently dialed contacts in a speed dial list accessible from both the mobile and home phone.

The Cobra Tag Bluetooth tagging system, which helps avoid losing car keys and other tagged valuables, will be available through retailers nationwide in July at suggested retail price of $59.99. The Cobra Tag App for Blackberry will also be available at no cost from the Blackberry App World at that time along with the Android App in the Android Market.

The tagging system consists of a smartphone app paired via Bluetooth to a small key-fob device. Users download the app to their smartphone and attach the Cobra Tag device to items such as car keys, a purse, or laptop bag. The system monitors the distance between the phone and tagged item, and the phone produces an audible alert if they become separated.

The Cobra Tag app also records the GPS location and the time of day the item became separated and sends the information to a contact list via email, text message, or linked Facebook or Twitter account.

The company’s iRadar app for Android becomes available April 4 following the October 2010 launch of the iRadar for iPhone app.

iRadar consists of a dash-mounted radar/ laser detector priced at a suggested $129 and the free iRadar app, which communicates via Bluetooth to the radar/laser detector. From the app, users can control detector settings. Using a phone’s GPS, the app alerts drivers to speed and redlight cameras, known speed traps and dangerous intersections. The alerts are shown visually on the smartphone and emitted audibly from the radar detector.

The app also shows compass heading, and car battery status. Cobra iRadar users can also submit database updates and alert other iRadar customers in real time to upcoming threats.

APP SCREENSHOTS

Amazon Appstore offers in-browser Android emulator

As part of Amazon's new Android Appstore, the company has integrated a unique feature that allows customers to try out certain apps without leaving the browser. The 'test drive' system reportedly works with an Android emulator that resides on the retailer's EC2 cloud. Users can view a virtual handset and try out apps using the mouse or keyboard input.
It is unclear if Amazon plans to expand the range of existing apps that support the test drive feature, as the initial availability appears to be limited. Only a few of the top listings are supported, including titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Newsweek Mobile.

Aside from the test drive feature, Amazon is implementing aggressive pricing strategies designed to woo customers. Visitors to the app portal can download a different premium app each day for free. According to a TechCrunch report, the retailer still gives developers a 20 percent cut of the original price for each app.

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G (android): Hands On

The Sidekick looks even better in person than it does in photos. The matte black model is smooth and soft, made of solid plastic, with a confident feel to it. The 3.5-inch, 800x480 screen is bright and tight.
Teens will still love this phone, because it's a texting beast. Samsung, smartly, kept the terrific Sidekick keyboard, with its slightly stiff, well-separated and bubbled buttons. The phone can be used closed, as a touchscreen phone with a virtual keyboard, or can snap open smartly with the screen sliding up to reveal the keyboard.
The Sidekick is an Android 2.2.1 phone with some pretty heavy customizations, but I think they're good looking. You can look at the slideshow in this story and decide for yourself. Pretty much everywhere you'd expect to see either text or a rectangle on an Android phone has been edited a bit. A little bar across the top of the screen keeps track of which of the seven home screens you're on. The standard Android icon font has been replaced by a small, all-caps font. At the bottom of the screen (or the side, depending on how you're holding it) are the words "phone," "apps," and "contacts" rather than confusing icons representing the same ideas.
Now that I think about it, the fonts, boxes of colors, and use of text rather than icons rather reminds me of Windows Phone 7's Metro design language, which makes an odd sort of sense: Microsoft bought Danger, maker of the old Sidekicks, and while that team wasn't involved in this phone, their spirit lives on.
he four Sidekick "jump" keys around the edges of the phone seem a bit vestigial, and they are; they played important roles in the old Danger OS, but here they're really just programmable shortcut keys. Three customizable colored LEDs along the top of the screen play the role of the old "disco ball," telling you about new messages. I like how they're customizable; you can turn them on or off as you like.
The purely cosmestic customizations don't seem to drag down performance. The Sidekick felt even zippier than the usual Samsung Galaxy S phone, which was surprising given that they share the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor. And there's all the usual Android goodness in here, including the excellent Web browser and the 100,000-plus Android Market apps.

Logitech launches Squeezebox Controller app for Android phones and tablets

We're not certain this is the "ground-breaking new product" Logitech was hiring Android engineers for, but Squeezebox fans packing an Android tablet or phone have something new to download now that an official remote app is available. It gives full control over WiFi to all the Squeezeboxes you can fit in your home and brings the usual controls, metadata and album artwork from player to your mobile's screen. While we're still keeping our fingers crossed for a Vizio-style Android music box in the future if you have a 2.1 or later device in hand and a Squeezebox Touch, Boom, Duet or similar on the end table, you'll want to head directly to that Market link below or check out the full description on Logitech's site.

Android App Video Review: Guerrilla Bob

Dual-stick shooters have been one of the larger genres to dominate the Android Market in games, although things seemed to be slowing down. Just when I thought I might see the last of them, Guerrilla Bob pops into the Android Market and yet again challenges me to take down as many bad guys as I can.
 hsa
This time around, you will be fighting a wide variety of terrorist-looking enemies. Armed with a wide arsenal of dangerous weapons, it’s your job to clean up the filth.
The game comes with three different flavors to play. You can play through the arcade mode where points are all the matters, you can choose the mercenary mode to collect money from fallen enemies and buy larger weapons or upgrades, or you can choose the classic survival mode which tosses you against a never-ending barrage of enemies.
All modes are fun, although there is something to be said about the mercenary mode. While this mode isn’t too exciting when playing alone, the game’s option to play with a friend makes it a ton of fun.
Overall, the game brings a fun multiplayer and a decent single player campaign to play through. Check it out.

Over 1, 50,000 Apps Available In Android Market

If there is intense competition among mobile phone vendors across the globe, then war between the different mobile phone Android Applications Picoperating system is not far behind. Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, RIM’s BlackBerry, Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 are some of the top notch mobile operating systems available in today’s market.
Of the aforementioned OS, Android OS is one of the fastest growing mobile phone OS in the world which has given a tough competition to its counterparts. A major factor behind the growth of Android is the availability of multiple applications in the Android market.

Success Depending Upon Availability of Apps

It is to be noted that, today success of a mobile OS is largely dependent on the availability of applications in their respective application store. While Apple’s App store leads the way with presence of more than 300,000 applications, Android is bridging up the gap thick and fast. Android market has more than 1, 50,000 applications available which users can download as per their requirement.
It is not surprising about the growth of applications in the Android market. There has been an increasing demand for Android phones which has generated tremendous interest among developers regarding the platform. Though the road is long for Android to topple Apple, yet with cell phone manufacturers rolling out Android powered devices, the number of Android apps is expected to further increase. Recently Google has come up with a website called Android Market Webstore which makes it users to purchase several Android apps.
